Corey Scobie, CTO @ Symend #AccessAlberta Profile

We recently had a chance to catch up with Corey Scobie, one of the many ex-pat Albertans living in the San Francisco Bay Area, as part of our #AccessAlberta campaign and our profile of Albertans Around the World

Corey had some exciting news to share that is simply fantastic for Alberta! After first leaving Alberta in 1998 to work for a software company in Oslo, Norway, and eventually settling near San Francisco after a stop over in Boston, Corey recently accepted the role of CTO at Calgary-based Symend.

Corey’s most valuable piece of advice for Alberta business leaders, and what he’s learned after leaving the region:

I’ve learned to think about growth and scale of a company in a different way than is the norm in Alberta. My advice for grads and founders is to start with the mentality that this is now a global economy and to unbound your thinking about how to capitalize on that opportunity. Alberta has as much access to the rest of the world as Silicon Valley.

When asked what Corey misses the most about Alberta?

I miss being close to my immediate family, but we find as many opportunities to connect as possible. I miss lake life in the summer at Wizard Lake, which has been my family’s summer playground since before I was born.

Corey’s excited about helping Alberta companies tap into the resources and innovation that happens in the US and in Northern California. He has just completed the acquisition of his previous startup, Chef Software and started his new role as CTO of one of the fastest growing startups in Alberta history - Symend. Symend, founded in 2016 and headquartered in Calgary, has grown +250% in the past 12 months. Symend clients achieve exceptional results using state-of-the-art behavioral science and technology to engage at-risk customers with empathy and dignity when they need it most. Corey is excited about bringing together Alberta and Silicon Valley in this new venture.
